Portishead Radio
Located on the Bristol Channel coast near Burnham on
Sea, Portishead Radio is BT's long-range
maritime
communications station which has been providing radio
communications to ships since 1920! Originally located
at Devizes, Wiltshire, the station moved to its present
site in 1924 and opened its transmitter site at Portishead,
near Bristol, in 1927. Although the Portishead site
closed in 1978, the station retained the name and
is undoubtedly the most famous maritime radio station
in the world.
The highly-qualified and experienced staff are well
used to handling calls and messages from all types
of craft, ranging from the smallest yacht to Royal
Naval aircraft carriers! In fact, ever since the early
days of yacht racing in the 1960s, Portishead Radio
has been providing a valuable service to the leisure
market and, despite the numerous technological advances
of recent years, is still in demand for the BT Global
Challenge.

Portishead Radio offers numerous facilities for the
leisure market. Besides messaging and voice communication

Portishead Radio won the 1995 RYA Service to Industry
award in recognition of services to the leisure market
- an assurance that communications requirements entrusted
to them will be in the best possible hands.
For the maritime industry, Portishead still provides
a radiotelegraphy (Morse code) service, which is still
proving very popular.
