Two weeks ago we were spending our first night on dry land. Well our first early morning. Those initial beers and burgers outside a café at 2am were reminiscent of collecting outside a kebab van after a really good night out and actually enjoying a donner. How we savoured those beers and luxuriated in fresh water, clean sheets and good food. And to think we're going to abandon it all again in two weeks' time. Doesn't bear thinking about.

But we're in holiday mode now, and Rio is the place to do it. Almost deserved after a week of cleaning and repairing the boat, and recovering from the inevitable parties - which did tend to slow the workforce and make for longer tea breaks. Quite like home. It was clearly essential to greet the other yachts as they arrived, to share celebratory beers and Atlantic stories - which got taller as the evenings grew longer.

This week it's important to make the most of our time off. To have no fixed schedule and do our own thing. And get away - away from the yachts and away from your crew, lovely as they are. Whether it's joining the backpackers on buses loaded with screaming children, chickens and pregnant women to do a whistle-stop tour of Brazil, or mooching around on a beach with a trashy novel, watching the world of Copacabana go by. I treated myself to a trip to a local beauty parlour for a quick waxing session - an essential part of the Rio experience. I can now confirm that the Brazilian bikini line is rather different to the Brighton version.

Our thoughts are turning to the next leg and the horrors that it entails, and we're beginning to discuss them. There'll be plenty more of that next week as boat preparations pick up again in earnest, leading to the start on the 20th. The pressure will really be on. But more of that next week - there's a party to go to !!.

    Regards from Rio, Sarah
