BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE -
PROGRESS REPORT AFTER THE FIRST NIGHT'S SAILING

Southampton (UK), Monday 30th September 1996.

After their first night at sea, the fleet of the BT Global Challenge is now lying some 30 miles off the
west coast of Jersey. Group 4 has lost her lead overnight to Toshiba Wave Warrior, and Concert
has vastly improved her position by moving up from 11th to 3rd place.

Global Teamwork has been working very hard to make up for lost time (as a result of the penalty
imposed for a premature start), and her crew report great camaraderie aboard after such a fantastic
opening to the world's toughest yacht race.

The spread from top to bottom of the fleet is only 33 miles, and they are now taking a westward tack
to go out around Ushant, off the west coast of France.

Messages received overnight from the fleet indicate that many crew have been suffering from sea
sickness, but neverthless spirits are high. A message from Group 4 sums up feelings that are
probably shared by other crews :

Group 4 message (sent at 10.14 hrs GMT)

"After an emotional and exciting start to race most crew members suffering from effects of rough
weather and many seeing Saturday's dinner again. Skipper enjoyed a very large portion of lamb
casserole as a result. We're slowly settling into watch systems and duties on board but everything
seems to take twice as long as it should with breaks to take air and visit the heads. Lots of groaning
heard overnight and bodies splayed on deck. Although not much chat I think we were united in our
thoughts - have we really got 30,000 miles to go and have we actually paid to do this?"
