BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - REFLECTIONS ON THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME Tuesday January 21st 1997 Now that all the amateur sailors taking part in the BT Global Challenge are on stop-over in Wellington (New Zealand), Race News takes the opportunity to look back on the race so far and share some of the most interesting messages that were sent by the fleet during their 6,600 mile voyage from Rio de Janeiro to Wellington. Featured below are a selection of comments from a variety of yachts; more will follow over the next few days. Courtaulds International, 31.12.96 : "Happy New Year from a wet, windy and bloody uncomfortable yacht in the middle of nowhere. What the hell are we doing out here?" Motorola, 28.12.96 : "The most frustrating day of the leg so far had us trying to catch whatever wind we could. At times the apparent wind speed dropped to zero, with an equal effect on our boat speed... the sound of empty sails flapping and the boom swinging back and forth quickly irritated even the most tolerant crew members - the only consolation being that using the heads became much more comfortable." Nuclear Electric, 29.12.96 : "We have developed a new performance indicator... it is the `sandwich target speed' (STS), which is the speed required to be reunited with loved ones, dry land and alcohol by midnight local time in New Zealand... sandwich is boat slang for our partners, derived from a crucial question which hounded us during the exotic temptations of our first stopover in Rio, namely, should you bring your sandwiches to a feast?"
