BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE -
COUNTDOWN TO RESTART IN NEW ZEALAND

Monday 3rd February 1997

It is now less than one week until the BT Global Challenge sets off on the 3rd leg to Sydney
(Australia). The race will restart from Wellington (New Zealand) on Sunday February 9th at 1.00
p.m. local time (midnight on February 8th in the UK). The journey will take the fleet over
approximately 1,250 miles, and is estimated to take a total of 6 days. The fastest yachts are
expected to arrive in Sydney's Darling Harbour on Saturday February 15th after a week-long dash
across the Tasman sea. This leg has been nicknamed the Chairman's leg, as several senior
employees from a number of yacht sponsor companies are taking part.

This leg is thought by many to be the easiest leg of the race, but this is not the case. Due to the
length of the leg, the yachts will be racing very hard, using tactics and skills to out manoeuvre each
other. It is expected that the yachts will never be far from sight of each other, and the gauntlet will
well and truly be thrown down between some of the rival yachts, which could make for a very
exciting, short, sharp and fiercely-fought battle.

The fleet of the BT Global Challenge has been on stopover in Wellington's Lambton Harbour since
early January, and in the final week before the race restarts, the 14 skippers and their 182 crew
volunteers will be busy making the necessary preparations. Once they arrive in Sydney, the sailors
will have a short break of just over a fortnight before embarking upon the fourth leg of the race,
sailing 6,300 gruelling miles to Cape Town (South Africa).

The sailors will be looking forward to sailing in warmer conditions; first they will battle against the
winds for which Wellington is famous, before sweltering in the heat of an Australian summer. Let's
hope they've all got their sunblock!
