BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - LEG THREE GET OFF TO AN EXCITING AND HIGH SPEED START Southampton (UK), Sunday 9th February 1997 The third leg of the BT Global Challenge got underway this morning at 00:00 hrs GMT (13:00 hrs local time) from Wellington (New Zealand). The gun was fired from HMNZS Wakato, a Royal, New Zealand Navy frigate by New Zealand's Governor General Hardie-Boys. The 14 yachts of the BT Global Challenge got off to a clean start. First to cross the line was Save The Children, closely followed by Courtaulds International and Heath Insured II, who quickly overtook the others to lead the way down to the 1st buoy (OPT buoy). Heath Insured II went round the 1st buoy followed by Group 4, Courtaulds International and Save The Children. All the yachts were in a tight pack. The excitement heightened as the yachts headed back over the starting line, passed the 2nd buoy, the Principal Committee Vessel. Heath Insured II still managed to maintain their lead but it was so tight that Group 4, following closely behind, had to dive under Heath Insured II's stern to clear her. Save The Children meanwhile maintained her lead at the front, by rounding the buoy in third place as all the yachts headed towards the third buoy. Heath Insured II pulled away with Group 4, Nuclear Electric and Save the Children chasing in their respective order, as they beat their way to the the 3rd buoy in 25-30 knots of wind. This raised the excitement levels of the spectators on the many boats following the yachts out of Wellington harbour, as Nuclear Electric, Group 4 and Save The Children are all hot favourites in the yacht race. As the yachts head down to the 3rd buoy the Somes Island buoy Heath Insured II and Group 4 are neck and neck, with Heath Insured II just holding the edge.
