BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - PAUSE TO REMEMBER HONOURS ANZAC DAY Cape Town (South Africa), Friday April 25th 1997 Today at 11am local time the Royal British Legion's entry in the BT Global Challenge, Pause to Remember, will sail out of Cape Town waterfront - escorted by the South African Navy - to hold an off-shore service and dedication to honour ANZAC day and pay tribute to the Australian and New Zealand troops who have given their lives in conflicts this century. On board with skipper Tom O'Connor will be race organiser Chay Blyth, the New Zealand Consul Ian Sims CBE, Harry Bent of the South African Legion, Col Pat O'Sullivan OMSS Hon Col Cape Town Rifles (Dukes), together with the Regimental Padre Gerald England and a trumpeter of the Cape Town Highlanders. Following a short service, wreaths from both countries are to be floated and a two minute silence observed. The Royal British Legion's entry in the BT Global Challenge - the cost of which is underwritten by a number of commercial organisations - represents and supports their campaign in the UK to encourage observance of the Two Minute Silence on Armistice Day (November 11th, in both the UK and South Africa). However, in Australia and New Zealand, it is ANZAC Day (April 25th) which is the national day of commemoration and remembrance. Originally ANZAC Day was established to pay respect to the troops who lost their lives at Gallipoli (ANZAC = Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). However, it has now come to represent remembrance for the loss of all troops from those countries during the past century, from the South African wars up to Vietnam. Today's event off the Cape Town coast has been organised as a mark of respect for the New Zealanders and Australians by the crew of Pause to Remember. Throughout the BT Global Challenge, the crew of Pause to Remember have been the guests of ex- Service organisations in each port of call. Skipper Tom O'Connor and his crew of thirteen amateur sailors are currently in the capable hands of the South African Legion, and at their next port of call - Boston - they will be welcomed by the American Legion. This in-harbour support not only assists the Royal British Legion to take their message of Remembrance around the world but reinforces the close bonds that already exist between ex-Service organisations around the world. Pause to Remember and the other BT Global Challenge yachts are due to set sail from Cape Town on Sunday May 4th on the fifth leg of the race. They are expected to arrive in Boston after a 7,000 mile journey on or around June 12th.
