BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - TIME & TIDE CLOSE ON CAPE COD Southampton (UK) Wednesday 11th June 1997 As of 07:50 hrs GMT this morning, the last yacht of the BT Global Challenge fleet still to reach Boston was Time and Tide who still had 62 miles to go. Struggling with the breeze, James Hatfield skipper aboard Time & Tide shows there continues to be humour amongst the crew: "Winds light with lots of fishing boats. It is bloody cold though the forecast for Boston is 90°. Quote of the evening `James, I think there is fog up ahead, can you see it on the radar ?'" Her closest rival 3Com crossed the finishing line at 03:27:39 hrs GMT this morning (11.27 pm 10th June in Boston) to a jubilant reception. Time and Tide's arrival is expected at 16:19 hrs GMT today, just in time to take part in a worldwide event organised from Boston, the Big Brew Up. Famous for hosting Tea Parties, Boston is hoping to stage the world's biggest tea party in an attempt to get into the Guiness Book of Records. Organised by UK charity SSAFA Forces help (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association), the world's biggest tea party is being held on June 11th as part of a week of awareness and fund raising activities. Adding to the tea party will be 196 brave round the world yachtsmen and women, who are currently sailing in the BT Global Challenge. Today the entire fleet of fourteen yachts will be in port in Boston at the end of their fifth leg of the race and each yacht is planning to host a special BT Global Challenge tea party, helping SSAFA Forces Help to set a world record. Pots of tea will be brewed and drunk by the crew on each of the 67ft steel yachts while they are moored alongside in Boston's Rowes wharf. Whilst in Boston for the stopover, the crews have a full timetable of events as well as having to complete the maintenance aboard the yachts. A full programme for kids has been organised by the BT Global Challenge Club including a Virtual Freedom Trail around Boston to commemorate the Boston Stopover and give kids a flavour of the city. The Virtual Freedom Trail Game lets you follow a route around Boston on the internet which takes in the city's most memorable and historically significant landmarks. June 22nd will see Heath Insured II invite youth groups aboard its yacht to view the conditions the sailors live and work in. As with all stopovers there will be a celebration to celebrate the winning boat and to recognise the crews who have the most for one and another. This rip roaring party will be an old fashioned New England Clambake to be held at the New England Aquarium on June 24.
