Bumps and Bruises
by Dr. Chris Price - Chief Medical Officer

Abrasions, contusions and minor burns form the largest part of the voluntary workload of any medic on the BT yachts. The crew aboard 'Pause to Remember' are just as good at treating these problems as myself. Often, before I am called, a cold pack is already in place and some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics dispensed, so my role is often one of reassurance. Where an injury looks more serious I am occasionally asked if a bone is fractured or a ligament torn which can be difficult without the benefit of X-rays. I am frequently called upon to dress small wounds/burns and it is then I wish my nursing skills were a bit better ! I keep a record of all ailments and injuries in a medical log and hope to write these up on a fleet basis on my return.
