BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - THE FLEET LEAVES OCEAN VILLAGE

Southampton UK, Sunday 29th September 1996

Huge crowds braved driving rain and high winds to bid farewell to the BT Global Challenge fleet as
the yachts slipped from their moorings at 07.00 hrs GMT this morning.

Befitting to "The World's Toughest Yacht Race" the weather has literally whipped up a storm. Far
from dampening spirits, however, the heavy conditions have steeled the resolve of the crews.
Resplendent in full foul weather clothing they laughed and joked with friends and family and left
Ocean Village to great cheers from the crowd and the blowing of ships' hooters.

Now, with just over half an hour to the start at 11.05 hrs GMT (12.05 BST), the rain has stopped,
the clouds are lifting and the stage is set for a great race. Presently the yachts are taking up
positions close to the start line, checking their sail plans and reviewing their tactics for the all-
important dash out of the Western Solent, and there are thousands of spectator craft on the water
to see them go.

After four years of preparation and training the skippers and crews of the BT Global Challenge will
have a fast and exciting first few hours.

Follow their progress and read their reports here - more follows soon...
