BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST YACHT RACE GETS OFF TO A FAST AND WINDY START Southampton UK, Sunday 29th September 1996 The BT Global Challenge - the world's toughest yacht race - got off to a flying start today at 11.05 GMT (12.05 BST) when HRH The Princess Royal fired the start gun from Brittany Ferries Duc de Normandie at Gilkicker Point (Hampshire). With a strong southwesterly wind of approximately 35 knots gusting 46, the race start was thrilling. First across the start line was Global Teamwork, closely followed by Courtaulds, Concert and 3Com. Global Teamwork was declared 10 seconds PMS (premature start) and the decision of the Race Committee is that she will be required to heave to for one hour at the Needles Fairway buoy, at the western end of the Solent.
