BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - GLOBAL TEAMWORK CROSS FINISH
LINE IN 10TH POSITION

Southampton (UK), Monday 28th October 1996

Despite finding herself penalised for 1 hour after crossing the start line 10 seconds early, skipper
Merfyn Owen and his crew remained high spirited throughout the race to Rio. She has made an
incredible come-back, crossing the finish line in tenth position today at 06:48 hrs GMT.

Global Teamwork had her share of bad luck on this leg; a premature start, she blew her all purpose
spinnaker 12 hours later, and then found herself caught in no breeze 90 miles past Madeira which
pushed her south, rather than west as planned. However, she proceeded to gain over 100 miles on
the fleet to just 40 miles short of 5th position, only to be stopped in her tracks in the Doldrums, and
was pushed back 130 miles within 48 hours. None of this fazed the crew, and according to Merfyn,
the laughing on deck never stopped.

Merfyn knows that he and his crew are able to drive Global Teamwork as fast as any of the other
BT Global Challenge fleet, and according to him, faster than most. He reported on 25th October
that the crew are very much looking forward to the next leg.

Some 20 miles from the finish line, excitement was building on board at the prospect of arriving in
Rio:

Report received from Global Teamwork at 17:50 hrs GMT on Sunday 27 October
"This should cause a stir, get them out en mass from the bar or wherever they are. The parking
boat has paid up all its ticktets!"
