BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - A WELLINGTON WEDDING TAKES PLACE Thursday January 23rd 1997 The Race News office has been sent details of a Wellington wedding that took place on Tuesday January 21st. Charity organisation the Make-A-Wish Foundation in association with Challenge yacht Commercial Union held a wedding service for Captain Wishbone and Wanda Wellington (two teddy bears) at Wellington's Dockside Bar, surrounded by the rest of the fleet. Wanda was given away by Mayor of Wellington Mark Blumsky, and the Captain's Best Man was none other than actor and Commercial Union crew member Sean Blowers. An official marriage licence and certificate were drawn up for the occasion by the New Zealand Internal Affairs Department, and Wanda was presented with her very own, bona fide, miniature New Zealand passport. The wedding ceremony was conducted by Mayor Blumsky and in a break from the taking a traditional marriage vows both bears were heard to swear to each other to "love and to cherish until our stuffing falls out!" The New Zealand High Commissioner for Children Mr. Laurie O'Reilly was on hand to congratulate the happy couple, as were BT Global Challenge race organiser Chay Blyth, his wife Felicity, and the crew of Commercial Union. The event was held to raise the profile of Make-A-Wish Foundation and to encourage terminally-ill children to take advantage of a wide range of options available to make their wish come true. A number of large companies associated with the charity, including IBM, Foster's Carlton and United Breweries attended the wedding and promised further support to Make-A-Wish. Newly-weds Wanda and Captain Wishbone will travel on board the yacht Commercial Union, racing around the world as honorary crew with the BT Global Challenge, setting sail from Wellington on February 9th.
