BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - FLYING VISITS Tuesday 28th January 1997 With the lengthy break from the BT Global Challenge in Wellington (New Zealand), many of the crew have taken the opportunity to fly home and spend some well earned time with their families. Peter Calvin, 33 a member of the crew on Nuclear Electric, had to tear himself away from his new born son Jack to drive down to Southampton (UK) for the start of the first leg of the BT Global Challenge. Peter managed to spend only an hour with Jack after he was born before he had to leave his son behind in Huddersfield. Last week he flew back for the second time since the race start to see his son for a three week visit, and he is reported to be enjoying home cooked meals and the luxury of a proper bed. Amateur sailor Peter was spurred on to take part in the BT Global Challenge after his brother, Mike Calvin, a journalist, took part in the British Steel Challenge four years ago as a crew volunteer on Hofbräu Lager. Peter is keen to get back on board Nuclear Electric, and continue his adventure of a lifetime. "Obviously leaving Jack is hard " he said, "but I just want to get back, get on with it and get it finished." Another crew volunteer visiting England during the stopover is Chris Ogg, from Bromsgrove, West Midlands, a crew volunteer on Time & Tide. However, unlike other crew who have returned to enjoy home comforts and put their feet up, Chris came back to England to return to work for a couple of weeks, before rejoining the race at the beginning of February. Also flying out to New Zealand is HRH Prince Michael of Kent, who will be arriving in Wellington (New Zealand) on February 3rd. He will be travelling on official business for BT, as part of the BT Global Challenge round the world yacht race. During his time in Wellington he will be involved in the British High Commission and British Council's "The Link" programme (a series of events promoting the evolving relationship between Britain and New Zealand).
