BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE - GLOBAL TEAMWORK CROSS THE LINE FIRST. Southampton (UK), Sunday 29 June 1997 Yachts slipped their lines and headed out into the waters of Boston Harbour at 11.30 local time this morning after the blessing of the waves ceremony. Temperatures were in the early 90s and sunglasses, hats and sunblock were the order of the day. Jazz music played as large crowds gathered on the pontoons and dockside to watch the ceremony, along with assembled dignitaries including HRH Prince Michael of Kent. Proclamations were read on behalf of Mayor Menino of Boston and William Wells, Governor of the state of Massachussetts, declaring today to be "BT Global Challenge Day". Father Laplante wished the fourteen yachts godspeed, asked for fair and strong winds on their behalf and blessed them with water taken from Boston harbour and then the crew of each yacht gave three cheers for Boston before they set off out towards the start line. The crews made a colourful spectacle in their team shirts. The turquoise of Motorola, the yellow of Time and Tide, the bright green of Nuclear Electric and the red of Toshiba Wave Warrior and Courtaulds International created a sea of colour on the water. A large number of spectators craft followed the fleet, including canoes, a police launch and many small yachts belonging to the local sailing enthusiasts. The start gun was fired at 1.30pm local time, and the first across the line was Global Teamwork followed by Concert and Courtaulds International. As the yachts leave Boston behind, light winds meant a colourful display as the yachts all raised their promotional spinnakers..
