1997 will be the achievement of a lifetime for over 132 volunteer crew members, as they participate in what for many will be the biggest challenge of their lifetime, the BT Global Challenge.

On 29th September 1996 they will leave Southampton aboard 14 identical steel built yachts, each sponsored by an international company, to sail on the world's toughest yacht race. They will sail around the world 'the wrong way', against prevailing winds and currents. They will compete against the elements, coping with discomfort, extremes of weather conditions and against each other, in their bid to win the Princess Royal Trophy.

On their return, the crews will have developed effective teams, worked efficiently to repair the invevitable gear breakage's such a voyage will incur and will have developed high levels of determination, skill and stamina. They will have experienced something very special which they are unlikely to repeat. Their experiences and the jurney they undertake can be used by teachers as a vehicle and context for curriculum delivery.
