CREW

Yacht Name - Pause to Remember

The Legion was formed in 1921 after the First World War as a charitable organisation for members of the ex-Service community in need. Through its existence the Legion's principles have remained unchanged. Support for ex-Service personnel and their families is as relevant today as it was during both World wars - except that today many of the calls come from people who have served in Aden, the Falklands, the Gulf, Northern Ireland and Bosnia.

The Legion has around 750,000 members in over 3,200 branches and 900 clubs throughout England, Wales and Ireland. Much of the Legion's money is raised through local and national events, such as the famous annual Poppy Appeal, to pay for essential welfare and benevolent work among the ex-Service community. Each year the Legion receives over 200,00 calls for help in areas as diverse as convalescent care, pensions advice, resettlement training and small business advice and loans. Most of the work is administered through the Legion's network of 20,000 voluntary welfare workers.

In 1996 - their 75th Anniversary - the emphasis is on bringing new, young members into the Legion and indeed the entire crew of their yacht, Pause to Remember, are joining the Legion as associates.

In addition to its welfare work, the Legion through its activities each November underlines its custodianship of the theme of remembrance. This year they are endeavouring to offer people the chance to pause for two minutes at 11am on the 11th of November - Armistice Day - hence the name of the yacht, 'Pause to Remember'. The call for a two minute silence is likely to be taken up throughout the UK and, through the BT Global Challenge, the message will be carried around the world.
