Serco Group plc is a major corporate supporter of Save the Children, the official charity of the BT Global Challenge and has sponsored the yacht bearing the charity's name in "the world's toughest yacht race." Its sponsorship of the yacht "Save the Children" is the focal point of a year long fundraising drive for the charity, involving Serco employees and their families world-wide. By September 1997, when Serco celebrates its tenth anniversary, it is hoped that £300,000 will have been raised. The yacht naming ceremony, on 9 July 1996, was performed by HRH The Princess Royal, who is both President of Save the Children and Patron of the Race. "Save the Children" is liveried in the charity's familiar red logo and the new characters - the Fun Raisers - 4 illustrations of brightly coloured children.

Commenting for Serco Group plc, Richard White, Chief Executive,
said "We were looking for a major challenge to celebrate our
10th anniversary and the combination of the world's toughest
yacht race and raising £300,000 for a well respected
international charity provide the perfect catalyst for our staff
world-wide." Save the Children's Director of Marketing, John Kingston, commented "We are grateful for Serco's commitment: the funds raised by both the race and Serco will be vital for the continuation of our work. The added benefit of having our own yacht is that it will raise awareness of Save the Children around the world."
