This is the first time that a round the world fleet has called at Boston, Massachusetts, the capital of New England. The region, which includes such renowned sailing towns as Camden (Maine), Newport (Rhode Island), and Mystic (Conneticut), has over three hundred years of maritime heritage. From the Mayflower which landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 to the Nantucket and Cape Cod whalers, ships and sailing have been a New England obsession. When the yachts sail into Boston Harbor, the crews will see a waterfront alive with activity. Over the years, as New England's commercial shipping base died, so did its waterfront. This area has since undergone a renaissance through the efforts of the Massachusetts Port Authority and the city government of Boston. Today, new marinas sit side by side with state-of-the-art container ports and public parks.
