There is nowhere else in the world that quite matches Rio for its party atmosphere, infectious foot tapping samba rhythm. The Rio Yacht Club which is hosting this race for the second time, is one of the most exclusive sailing venues in the world. Situated in the shadow of Rio's famous Sugar Loaf mountain it was once a flying boat station. This is where the crews unwind after the first 5,000-mile leg down from Southampton and gird themselves for rounding Cape Horn and their first taste of the bitter Southern Ocean storms. If the last race is any gauge, Rio can also be expected to produce a spectacular finale to the first stage, within minutes rather than hours dividing the yachts at the finish. Most of the crew, during the stopover will find a few days to explore the country with trips to the northern rain forests or Iguassu, the spectacular waterfalls that mark the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, as well as view Rio from the top of the Sugar Loaf and Statue of Christ that dominates the mountain skyline.
