Achievements


1958/67 Served with the Third Battalion Parachute Regiment including theatres of active service
1966 With a companion, rowed the North Atlantic in an open Dory
Awarded the British Empire Medal
Voted Man of the Year
1970/71 In the yacht British Steel, became the first person to sail alone and non-stop around the world against the prevailing winds and currents
Made Commander of the Order of the British Empire
1971 Voted Yachtsman of the Year
Awarded the Chichester Trophy
1973/74 In the yacht Great Britain II with a crew of paratroopers, won the Elapsed Time Prize for the fastest yacht overall in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race.
1976 Run down by a ship in the English Channel whilst sailing singlehanded in an 80 foot Trimaran.
1978 In the yacht Great Britain IV won the Round Britain Race
In the yacht GBIV came second in the Round Island Race
1981 In the yacht Brittany Ferries GB won the Two Handed Trans-Atlantic Race with companion Rob James breaking the existing record.
1981 In the yacht Brittany Ferries came second in the Round Island Race
1981/82 Captained the yacht United Friendly, the first British yacht home in the Whitbread Round the World Race
1982 Second overall, first in Class I Round Britain and Ireland Race
1983 First in Class Plymouth Vilamoura Plymouth Race
1984 In the trimaran Beefeater II with companion Eric Blunn capsized off Cape Horn during New York - San Francisco record attempt, eighteen hours in water before rescue.
Involved in inception of the Silk Cut Nautical Awards and became Chairman of the Judging Committee.
1985 Organised the Silk Cut Multihull Challenge Race from Brighton to London finishing at Tower Bridge
1986 Co Skipper on the successful Blue Riband attempt - Virgin Atlantic II
1988 Competed in the Single Handed Trans-Atlantic
1989 Launched the 1992 Round the World Yacht Race
The British Steel Challenge
1994 Received Special Award for Outstanding Services to Yachting from Yachting Journalists Association
Received Honorary Doctor of Technology awarded from the university of Plymouth.
1997 Knighted for Services to Sailing.

Chay Blyth has considerable experience of blank sheet projects. He has written five books on his adventures.
